Danish Landscape

I'm trying to find a setting in which to place my monuments, especially as both my clients are Danish. I feel it is appropriate to place them within the Danish context. I feel this is is mostly important in regard to Karen Clemmenson as a key component to her work is being "at one with nature" - a concept that I'd like to play with for my final submission.. I see lots of re-starting over the next few days!

The Cliffs of the Island of Møn, 1842
Louis Gurlitt
Danish, 1812-1897
Oil on canvas, 138 x 197 cm
Statens Museum for Kunst, KMS 525

"As a citizen of Holstein Gurlitt had natural links to the Copenhagen art scene, but spent a lot of time travelling the German realms. He painted Danish scenes over several periods, meaning that his circle of motifs was wider in scope than that that of his Danish fellow artists. During the years 1840-43 he joined in the celebration of the Danish countryside like the pioneering Lundbye. He was one of the first artists to journey to Jutland, where he found subject matter for several large panoramic landscapes. While Lundbye worked on A Danish Coast, Gurlitt worked on this painting of a scene on the island of Møn, and the two artists undoubtedly inspired each other. With its white cliffs rising straight out of the sea, the eastern coastline of Møn held a special attraction for artists. Gurlitt, however, chose to depict the cliffs from the land side with the Baltic as the backdrop. The pointed chalk spire known as the Summer Spire is outlined against the sky, and the gorge in front creates a pull down towards the sea." http://www.artsmia.org/mirror-of-nature/nordic-art-detail.cfm?nor_art_cat=14&lng=0

"Denmark is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. The country of Denmark, together with Greenland and the Faroe Islands, comprises the Kingdom of Denmark (Danish: About this sound Kongeriget Danmark (help·info), Danish pronunciation: [ˈkɔŋəʁiːəð ˈdanmɑɡ̊]; Faroese: Kongsríki Danmarkar; (Kalaallisut: Kunngeqarfik Danmarki; German: Königreich Dänemark). It is the southernmost of the Nordic countries, southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and bordered to the south by Germany. Denmark borders both the Baltic and the North Sea. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland (Jylland) and many islands, most notably Zealand (Sjælland), Funen (Fyn), Vendsyssel-Thy (commonly considered a part of Jutland), Lolland, Falster and Bornholm, as well as hundreds of minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. Denmark has long controlled the approach to the Baltic Sea (dominium maris baltici); before the digging of the Kiel Canal, water passage to the Baltic Sea was possible only through the three channels known as the “Danish straits”." http://www.winwallpapers.net/denmark-wallpapers-3313.html

Electroliquid Aggregation

“Why still speak of the real and the virtual, the material and immaterial? Here these categories are not in opposition, or in some metaphysical disagreement, but more in an electroliquid aggregation, enforcing each other, as in a two part adhesive.”

Concept + Axonometric Drawings

Dorte Mandrup-Poulsen

Concept: Flexibility, light and space - elements that combine the tactile and poetic experience of space.

"look out, look in, look through or look at oneself."

Simple & effective.

Drawing on the notion that spatial requirements are very childish; spatial sequences are related to a basic, childish desire to hide, slip away or be secretive having private places.

Karen Clemmenson

Concept: Human interaction and engagement with space; basic; subtle; humble; at one with nature.

Influenced by Clemmensons' elongated 'Lo-Skolen'

Final Work

I decided to put this work in the snowy mountains of Japan, having both Jiro Ono and Shinya Kimura being Japanese.  My intention was to create an isolated, 'Miesian Box' which lights up the serene surrounding environment. In this way, the structure becomes luminous and has an enchanting effect. This concept is synonymous with the works of Ono & Kimura.

My material section aimed to create a Site Specific work, as well as draw on the feeling expressed by the respective artists. This is why I use raw materials such as Brick and Graphite for Kimura, which is stunningly juxtaposed with the industrial steel. This plays on the notion of 'organic vs. industrialisation'. Whereas Ono's space is created by Mother of Pearl stairs representing elegance, and traditional Timber. The Datum is made up of Cement  as I believe this is a contemporary material that doesn't detract from the space and allows the space to speak for itself. This too reflects the respective artists as both being contemporary in their own way; Ono's new take on the art of Sushi, and Kimura's revolutionised work of creating motorcycles as an instinctive practice.

My Final Work was influenced by the following Section. It responds to both nouns oriental & urban.

Chosen Textures

Marble: I chose to use Marble in the staircase's connecting Jiro Ono's workspaces as I believe it is a sturdy material & provides a sophisticated, yet simple look. Indicative of Ono's art of sushi.

Aerated Autoclad Concrete: I chose to use this material in the datum as I believe when merging Kimura & Ono, you reach a contemporary equilibrium. This material also allows the space to speak for itself. It therefore exhibits and emphasises Kimura's striking motorbikes, and Ono's spectacular sushi skills in what I assume would be a social-gallery manner.

Graphite: Using graphite to mimic a road brings a a sense of rawness to Kimura's space. I felt it imperative to highlight this because despite Kimura's work being one of industrialisation, if one were to take a deeper look into his practice, they would find it to be a lot more organic.

In saying that, I wanted to highlight the juxtaposition in this idea of 'industrialisation vs. organic', which is why I made the staircase connecting Kimura's spaces out of Steel. This juxtaposition also proves visually stunning to me.
